Why do I have difficulty lifting my arm?

One of the reasons may be injury to the “Rotator Cuff”.   The Rotator Cuff is a strong tendon that is formed from four muscles originating off the shoulder blade or “scapula”.  This strong tendon is responsible for stabilizing the ball and socket-type joint of the shoulder.  As we age this tendon can become inflamed or torn.  This makes the joint unstable and thus makes it painful and weak particularly when elevating the arm overhead.  This is known as a “drop-arm sign”.  Depending on the age, health and activity level of the patient, treatment may be conservative or surgical.  Conservative treatment may include rest, cold compresses, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy and cortisone shots.  Surgical treatment may be arthroscopic or open.  Rehabilitation can be lengthy.
