What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects 3-5% of children making it the most common childhood behavioral disorder. It typically begins before age seven with symptoms that include inattention, impulsivity and/or hyperactivity. Although these are common symptoms in many children, in ADHD the symptoms are severe and cause significant impairment. The symptoms frequently become a problem when the child enters school because they have difficulty concentrating, sitting still and playing fairly. Genetic factors are associated with ADHD but environmental factors such as neurological injury, abuse, excessive television and diet may also play a role.

Many of the symptoms of ADHD improve as the child matures but in close to half the cases a significant degree of inattention and impulsivity persists into adulthood. In adulthood ADHD manifests itself as frequent job changes, relationship changes as well as poor planning and organization skills.

The treatment of ADHD involves a team approach including counseling, parent and teacher training, and medication if necessary.
