What can I do for my overweight child?
Obesity is increasing in the U.S. Treatment requires lifestyle change in addition to healthy eating. Healthy eating begins with eating a variety of wholesome foods. These include home cooked food with vegetables and whole grains. Sweets should be eaten in small quantities and are better after meals rather than stand alone snacks.
Drink more water and cut back on juice and soda. Start the meal with vegetables or salad. Limit chips and candy. Many kids buy food at school or convenience stores, so pack enough healthy food so that they don't need to stop for snacks. Be a good role model with your own eating habits and don't keep large amounts of sweets and junk food at home.
Exercise can include formal sports as well as increased walking and using stairs instead of elevators. Limit screen time (TV, video games, computer) and don't eat while watching TV. Combine TV with exercise such as small weights or an exercise bike.
