My child was prescribed Elidel Cream for eczema. I read the FDA issued a warning about this medication and Protopic Ointment, citing potential cancer risks. Should we stop using it?

"The American Academy of Dermatology is disappointed the FDA has taken this action, despite no data proving proper use of Elidel and Protopic is dangerous in people," says Clay J. Cockerell, M.D., president of the American Academy of Dermatology. This warning is based on animal studies, showing an increased risk of tumor formation when these medications were taken orally over time. Elidel and Protopic are creams applied to the skin. Little, if any, gets inside the body.

According to Novartis, Elidel's manufacturer, clinical studies of 19,000 patients showed no increased risk of skin or other cancers. Since December 2001, five million patients have been treated with no increase in cancers. Elidel and Protopic are considered safe when treating eczema for short durations. I recommend you continue using Elidel as prescribed by your doctor.
