In the summer we tend to drink more fluids because the heat and sun cause increased fluid loss from skin evaporation. This evaporated fluid loss does not contain much salt. However, we replace the fluid loss with products that contain salt, such at commercial ices tea, canned soda products, etc. It is the excess salt intake that causes fluid retention and edema. Replacing fluid losses with plain water or even better, low salt or distilled water could solve your problem.
However, remember that edema can be caused by heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure or peripheral venous vascular disease; so significant edema should prompt investigation.
