What is diverticulosis and diverticulitis?

Diverticulosis is derived from the Latin word "diverticulum" which means "small diversion from the normal path." Diverticuli are small balloon like pouches that occur in the colon as we age. This condition is unusual in children and young adults and occurs more frequently in people over 40 years of age. Men and women are thought to be equally afflicted and the cause is unknown, although aging, constipation and dietary factors have been implicated.

Most people develop diverticuli in the left or descending colon. The vast majority of patients have no symptoms but some have mild left lower quadrant pain. If a diverticulum becomes inflamed the condition is called diverticulitis. This condition may require antibiotics and a diet change. Some with diverticulosis develop a perforation and abscess while others can present with bleeding.

The best preventative for this condition is a high fiber diet or fiber supplements. Most nutrition experts recommend 20-30 grams of fiber per day (while most Americans generally consume only 10-15 grams).
