Will a diet of Pomegranate extract help prostate cancer?
Pomegranates have long been believed to offer multiple health benefits. They contain antioxidants, isoflavones (think soy), and phytoestrogens. In a recent study from the University of Wisconsin, mice fed a diet high in pomegranate extract had slower growth of their (human) prostate tumors than those who did not receive the extract. In a recent UCLA study, men who drank 8oz. of pomegranate juice a day had slower growth of prostate cancer as well. Other nutrients thought to be protective against prostate cancer include lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes, Vitamin E, and Selenium.
While it is still unclear whether prostate cancer can be prevented, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in animal fat is beneficial in many ways and may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. No matter how good your diet is, remember the importance of an annual PSA screening. The key to good results in prostate cancer treatment is early diagnosis.
