Adoumie article 3 / 02-06
What is an Aortic
aneurysm?
An Aneurysm is a weakening
or bulging that develops in a blood vessel.
Although different blood vessels might be involved, the most common site
is the aorta, particularly in the abdominal portion.
The condition is usually
asymptomatic. Diagnosis is made either
by physical exam where a pulsatile mass is noted, or
by x-rays (typically ultrasound or CT scan).
If left untreated the vessel
dilation might lead to rupture. This is
a highly urgent, life threatening condition.
Repair is either by less invasive (endovascular) or open surgical
techniques.
Currently, a bill that would
allow Medicare beneficiaries to undergo an abdominal ultrasound to diagnose
this condition is being considered by congress.
If passed, this would hopefully lead to earlier diagnosis and would help
save lives.
