Q: How can
I prevent my baby from becoming severely ill with diarrhea and vomiting?
A: The
most common cause of severe diarrhea and vomiting in babies is the rotavirus.
It is estimated that by the age of five, almost all children will have been
infected with the virus. When babies get this disease, they may not be able to
take enough fluids to keep them hydrated, and may need to be treated at the
emergency room or in the hospital.
Fortunately, there is a new
vaccine that can prevent this infection. It has been thoroughly tested and has
been found to be safe and effective in preventing severe illness caused by
rotavirus. It is given by mouth to
babies between 6 weeks to 12 weeks of age for the first of three doses. It can
save you much grief from a very common illness, especially if your child is in
a day care. As always, you should ask your own pediatrician for more details.
