What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy or malfunction of the nerves are commonly seen by neurologists. Generally, neuropathies are a result of other diseases. One common cause is diabetes. Other causes can include alcohol abuse, exposure to environmental toxins, vitamin deficiency, or as a side effect of certain medications.

A common symptom of neuropathy is difficulty with balance. This does not involve the balance organ in the middle ear, but instead causes problems with walking and balance because the impulses to the brain that help maintain balance are poorly transmitted by the malfunctioning nerves.

The treatment and / or prognosis for neuropathy depends on the underlying problem. Some causes such as vitamin deficiency or toxin exposure respond quite well when the offending agent is treated.
