I have experienced chronic lower back pain due to an impingement of a nerve, which is causing sciatica. My physician suggested a series of epidural treatments. Is this going to alleviate the pain?

Epidural blocks can provide therapeutic benefits in the presence of nerve root inflammation. Injections of local anesthetic and steroids can be effective. They are generally of short-term duration, anywhere from one to three months; however, they could get you through period of acute or sub acute exacerbation of pain.

Generally, post injection may provide a temporary relief from chronic pain; however, the pain may still persist, but the magnitude of that pain will be lessened. In this state, you may be able to begin physical therapy or other rehabilitative measures in a more "pain diminished state." In any case, accurate diagnosis of your condition is crucial prior to beginning the management of your chronic pain.
