Can Arthritis Cause Lower
Back Pain?
Yes, arthritis may cause
lower back pain by involvement of the small joints of the lower back vertebral
bones (lumbar spine). It is one of the
most common causes of the lower back pain in elderly, specifically if there is
a family history of arthritis. Patients
with lower back arthritis usually complain of dull aching, throbbing pain in
their lower back, buttocks, hips and thighs, most severe in the morning with
stiffness. Arthritis pain increases in
cold weather and in humid areas.
Arthritis is easy to diagnose it with physical examination and
x-rays. It can be effectively treated
with arthritis medications, specific exercises and in severe cases, with
injections. Arthritis in neck joints
(cervical spine) is a common cause of chronic headaches which can also be
treated.
